Port Alberni Project
The Wālyaqił Tiny Home Village in Port Alberni, British Columbia, stands as a testament to community collaboration and innovative housing solutions. Developed to address the pressing need for safe and secure accommodations for the city’s most vulnerable residents, this project brings together the efforts of the Port Alberni Friendship Centre, BC Housing, the City of Port Alberni, and other community partners. Beyond individual dwellings, the village offers communal facilities, including washrooms, laundry services, an administrative office, bicycle parking, and outdoor gathering areas. The Port Alberni Friendship Centre manages the site, ensuring 24/7 support services that encompass health and wellness programs, life-skills training, and culturally appropriate services tailored for Indigenous Peoples.

Vancouver Project
In December 2023, Vancouver launched a pilot project to address homelessness through a small-scale, innovative housing solution: the Tiny Village Shelter at 875 Terminal Avenue. Approved by City Council in February 2022 and funded through the City’s Empty Home Tax, the project consists of 10 tiny shelters—each about 100 square feet—providing transitional housing for up to 18 people, with a focus on couples or adult family members who are often unable to stay together in traditional shelters. Each unit is equipped with heating, air conditioning, electricity, lockable doors for privacy and security, as well as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. While there are no kitchens or bathrooms inside the units, residents have access to shared facilities at the adjacent Klahowya Tillicum Lalum shelter. Operated by the Lu’ma Native Housing Society, which also manages the neighboring shelter, the Tiny Village offers 24/7 staff support, meals, laundry, washrooms, and connections to broader housing and health services. As the first initiative of its kind in Vancouver, the project represents a step toward exploring low-barrier, dignified shelter options for those experiencing homelessness.
